Girls'Day 2023 at the HRZ

How does one create a web page with HTML? How does one set up a website in a local network? How can a server be effectively secured? How does a 3D printer work?

This year, for the first time, seven girls between the ages of 13 and 16 were able to find answers to these and many other exciting questions at the University Computer Centre of the University of Bonn as part of the Girls'Day 2023.

Highlights included a demonstration of the in-house 3D printer and a tour of the HRZ's server rooms. After brief theoretical introductions to various IT topics in the morning, the girls were able to put what they had learned into practice in the afternoon: in an interactive phase, they designed their own websites on the topic of "University buildings in Bonn". The results were impressive and could even be taken "home" via QR codes printed on playing cards to be presented to family and friends. At the end of the day, the specially created golden Girls'Day-at-the-HRZ medals could be collected from the 3D printer - a great reminder of an exciting day at the University Computer Centre of the University of Bonn!

"It was a successful day for everyone involved," says Karin Ahorner, who was responsible for the planning and implementation of the Girls'Day 2023 at the HRZ, "and we are pleased that we were able to get the girls excited about IT topics and working at our HRZ, in the hope that we can make an active contribution to increasing the quota of women in the IT sector, especially in the area of trainees."

Interested in an insight into the world of High Performance Computing?

This year as well the HRZ offer all members of the university the opportunity to participate in classes ranging from word processing to 3D printing over to digital editing.

While the classes usually take place in German, the High Performance Computing (in short HPC) classes will be taugth in English. Participants can choose between three different classes:

  • Version Control with Git, taking place on June 10th and 11th from 9:00 to 12:30 pm.
  • Introduction to Programming with Python, taking place on June 14th and 15th from 4:30 to 8pm.
  • Introduction to Working with HPC Clusters, taking place on July 12th and 13th from 4:30 to 8pm.
  • Linux Introduction Course, taking place on July 5th and 6th from 4:30 to 8pm.
This year as well we will be at the career fairs again.

In order to inform and inspire young students about IT and a possible apprenticeship with us as an IT specialist for system integration, we were at the career fair at the Antonius College in Neunkirchen, which took place there for the first time on February 27th.

In addition to receiving general information or asking specific questions, the students had the opportunity to take a closer look at one of our 3D printers in action, as well as the inside of a laptop and an old desktop computer. Our trainees explained the technology and functions to them in more detail - and of course they were allowed to tinker with it themselves to get a first feel for the technology.

Zoom becomes Zoom X - and for you almost nothing changes

From mid-March, the University of Bonn will be using Zoom X instead of Zoom to ensure better data protection.

For the time being, nothing will change for you: any meetings you have set up will remain unchanged - your user data and individual user settings will of course be taken with you when you move to the Telekom servers. Only the telephone dial-in numbers will change after the switch to Zoom X, so meeting invitations must be updated when using telephone participation. In addition, in the future it will only be possible to log in with a Uni-ID. If you are one of the users who still use Zoom without a "SingleSignOn" login, you will be contacted separately.

During the move, Zoom calls with the campus licence will not be possible between 11pm and 3am on 11 March 2023. Urgent video conferences can be held via the university's BigBlueButton cluster. For info, see the HRZ Doku.
