Virtual machines for institutes - uniVM
The service is free of charge and includes the provision of virtual machines based on predefined templates (CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian, Windows Server), against a cost contribution (breakdown in the application form), which can be requested with the help of a self-service portal by the user appointed by the institution. The templates contain an operating system in a minimal configuration and with settings optimised for VMs. The size of the VM (CPU, RAM, HDD) can be adjusted by the user within a predefined framework (quota).
For whom?
Institutions and facilities of the University of Bonn
This service is available to institutions and facilities of the University of Bonn and free of charge. Requesting access to the self-service portal for an institute is done via an application form.
What for?
Management of the VMs
Users have the possibility to manage VMs via the self-service portal provided (resource adjustment, creation of a snapshot,...). Everything from the operating system level of a VM is the responsibility of the service operator. They have full access to the guest operating system and are solely responsible for the maintenance of the operating system, security measures and the correct licensing of the installed software (see application form).
Backups of the VMs are created daily at storage level (NetApp storage snapshot), stored for 7 days and can be restored to the original VM on request.
In addition, the virtual machines are backed up for 60 days on a
separate storage area (ceph). The backup is also done daily.
Virtual machines can only be restored on commission via email.
How does it work?
We have collected further information in a wiki. There you will find, among other things, instructions for the management of virtual machines including the increase of resources (CPU, RAM, storage), the change to the community VLAN, as well as an overview of the configuration of the templates.
If you have any questions, please write to vhrz-support@uni-bonn.de.
Maintenance
We always carry out maintenance work (patchday) on the uniVM service on the first Wednesday of each month between 08:00 and 12:00.
HRZ-Doku
Detailed information and instructions can be found in the HRZ-Doku.
