WiFi - eduroam - reinstallation
Please use the following instructions to set up WiFi eduroam. The manual setup is only intended for technically experienced users.
Operating systems
The way to set up the eduroam WiFi depends on the version of the operating system used. Therefore, you need to know your current operating system version. You can determine the versions for the following operating systems.
Google Android
With Android, the layout, design and designations can vary depending on the manufacturer. The version can usually be found under Settings → About phone → Android version.
Apple iOS
The current version can be found under System Settings → General → About → Software Version.
Microsoft Windows
Select the "Start" tile icon in the lower left of the taskbar. Type "winver" in the search bar. Open the "winver" program, your current Windows version will be displayed there.
Apple MacOS
Select the Apple icon in the top left corner and then click on the "About This Mac" menu item, your macOS version will be found there.
Manuals
Step 1: Uninstalling an existing eduroam profile for Android
Before you can start setting up the eduroam WiFi configuration, the device must be free of older eduroam WiFi configurations. If the eduroam CAT app is already installed on your device, it is sufficient to delete this app.
If you have not installed the app on your end device, you can alternatively delete the WiFi configuration manually as follows:
- Open settings.
- Navigate to "Network and Internet" → "WiFi" → "Saved/Known Networks".
- Tap on each entry named "eduroam" and "eduroam-xyz" one after the other and tap "Remove/Forget" in each case.
Step 2: Reinstall Eduroam for Android
Important note on data protection
If the "Save to Google Drive" option is selected under "Settings / System / Backup" on your Android device, 802.1x credentials (e.g. your eduroam access data with Uni-ID and password) are also stored on Google servers secured. Since Google does not make any statements about how it is stored, in the worst case it must be assumed that this data will be transmitted and stored in plain text and therefore there is an increased data protection risk!
For Android there are 2 ways to install eduroam:
1) From version 8: Installation with GETeduroam
- Please install the "geteduroam" app
- After the installation, open the app and select "University of Bonn".
- Now enter your Uni-ID to log in (not just the Uni-ID, but including "...@uni-bonn.de").
- Click Connect to Network. The connection will be established automatically in a few seconds.
1) Installation with eduroam CAT
- Please install the "eduroam CAT" app
- Open the app, click on "Manual search", enter "Bonn" and select "University of Bonn".
- Confirm the requested permissions.
- Click on "Install" and allow the profile to be installed.
- Now enter your Uni-ID to log in (not just the Uni-ID, but including "...@uni-bonn.de") and then tap on "Install".
- The profile was successfully installed and the connection to eduroam was established.
Step 1: Uninstalling an existing eduroam profile for iOS
Before you can start installing the current eduroam profile file, the device must be free of older “eduroam” profile files. Delete them as follows:
- Open System Preferences.
- Search the "Profiles" category.
- Highlight the "eduroam®" entry with a click.
- Remove the selected profile by clicking the minus sign (-).
- If this category cannot be found in the settings, there is currently no configuration for Eduroam on the device and you can go directly to step 2 new installation.
Step 2: Reinstall Eduroam for iOS
To call up the required "eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT)" you need a working internet connection.
With the CAT tool you will receive a profile file with which you can set up eduroam under iOS.
- Download the profile file (preferably with Safari so that the profile is loaded automatically) and install the profile in the device settings.
- Now enter your Uni-ID to log in (not just the Uni-ID, but including "...@uni-bonn.de") and then tap on "Install". You may be asked to enter your user data several times at this point. This is necessary because the additional networks (SSIDs: eduroam-cs, eduroam-math, eduroam-stw and eduroam-ukb) are set up at the same time.
When using the CAT installation program, an existing profile is usually completely overwritten so that you do not have to delete it manually. You can go straight to step 2. If problems should arise, you can delete the profiles manually as follows (step 1).
Step 1: Uninstalling an existing eduroam profile for Windows
- Open settings.
- Navigate to "Network and Internet" → "WLAN" → "Manage known networks".
- Remove all entries with the name "eduroam" and "eduroam-xyz" from the list by clicking on "Don't save".
Step 2: Eduroam reinstallation for Windows
To call up the required "eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT)" you need a working internet connection.
With the CAT tool you will receive an installation file with which you can set up eduroam under Windows. The tool (see link below) guides you to the appropriate configuration based on the Windows version:
- Now enter your Uni-ID to log in (not just the Uni-ID, but including "...@uni-bonn.de") and then tap on "Install".
- Windows connects to the network when available. Sometimes the connection to the university's Eduroam network has to be established manually by entering your personal access data ("uni-id@uni-bonn.de" and password).
Please note that this will also set up the additional SSIDs eduroam-cs, eduroam-math, eduroam-stw and eduroam-ukb.
Before you can start installing the current "eduroam" profile file, the device must be free of older "eduroam" profile files.
Step 1: Uninstalling an existing eduroam profile for MacOS
- Open System Preferences.
- Type "Profile" in the search bar.
- Highlight the "eduroam®" entry with a click.
- Remove the selected profile by clicking the minus sign (-).
- If this category cannot be found in the settings, there is currently no configuration for Eduroam on the device and you can go directly to step 2 new installation.
Step 2: Eduroam reinstallation for MacOS
To call up the required "eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT)" you need a working internet connection.
With the CAT tool you will receive a profile file with which you can set up eduroam under macOS.
Step 1: Uninstalling an existing eduroam profile for Linux
- Open settings.
- Select category WiFi.
- Open the additional menu (" ⋮ " character at the top right next to the WLAN switch).
- Select menu item "Known wireless networks".
- Select all entries with the name "eduroam" and "eduroam-xyz" (tick the box to the left of the name).
- Click on the "Forget" button on the left below the list and confirm.
Step 2: Eduroam reinstallation for Linux
Recommended: Using the "eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT)".
With the CAT tool you get a Python script, with which you can set up eduroam under Linux. As a prerequisite, you must have the python
and dbus-python
packages installed.
- Open a terminal and run the script through the following command with the path to the script file: “python3 eduroam-linux-Universitat_Bonn-Users_with_valid_Uni-ID.py”
- Confirm the following window with "OK".
- Confirm the message with "Yes".
- Enter your access data (Uni-ID and password). The Uni-ID must be entered in full with the addition "..."@uni-bonn.de.
- The installation was successful. Click on "Ok".
- The connection to the Eduroam network is automatically established.

FAQs
Please check on a device with internet access whether you can log in to gosa.gosa.uni-bonn.de with your Uni-ID. If this is not the case, there is a problem with your Uni-ID. If you can log in there, please check whether the WiFi is set up for you according to the instructions (link to eduroam instructions) and/or set it up again if necessary. Otherwise, contact the IT Helpdesk.Aufklapp-Text
Please check the signal strength of the WiFi. If the signal is weak, please contact your local administrator (if available), who may have an overview of the WiFi expansion at a location.
