History of the University IT and Data Center

Here you will find an overview of the history and development of the University It and Data Center of the University of Bonn.

The foundation of the HRZ

The University Computing IT and Data Center of the University of Bonn was founded on 1 November 1974 at its current location in Wegelerstraße 6 (then in 5300 Bonn 1) with 14 employees at the time, as the ‘Regional University Computing Centre’ (RHRZ) from the ‘Computing Centre at the University of Bonn’, which had previously been operated by the Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung (GMD).

Over the course of its history, the ‘RHRZ’ developed into the University IT and Data Center (HRZ) and thus became the central IT service provider for the University of Bonn in all matters relating to information and communication technology. Today, almost 80 employees at the University IT and Data Center - divided into three departments and three staff units - ensure the provision and smooth operation of all central IT services at the University of Bonn.
