Time Server
The HRZ offers two time servers based on Network Time Protocol.
For whom?
Students & Employees
The service is available to all students and employees of the University of Bonn.
What for?
Exact time indication
The time server allows the computer to be provided with an exact time to the second.
How does it work?
Two options
The HRZ offers two time servers based on Network Time Protocol (NTP version 4, see http://www.ntp.org).
The time servers can be accessed at clock1.hrz.uni-bonn.de and clock2.hrz.uni-bonn.de (port 123 tcp/udp) within the university network.
The time servers are embedded Linux servers with clock modules that run as NTP servers with the stratum value 1. They obtain their time via DCF-77 signal from Mainflingen near Frankfurt am Main. By means of highly accurate corellation receivers, deviations from standard time between 0-2 µs are achieved.
For the use of devices that have to be used temporarily outside the network of the University Bonn, we recommend the use of the
time server pool pool.ntp.org.
